Being in a position of leadership is probably one of the most gratifying rewards a person can experience. Whether one becomes a leader in school, work or in a community, they receive this distinction to do their best to attain the expectations of their constituents. However, there is no guide for someone to be a perfect leader. Leadership is arguably a God given talent and can be detected at an early age and developed all throughout life. Leaders are those that have a strong, opinionated mind and are sensitive to the needs of others.

Developing a strong mind is crucial for those that want to become true leaders. It is no secret that leaders are always asked to make important decisions, which have a huge impact on the direction of a company or group. The leader should be strong in the sense that he is not afraid to commit mistakes but smart enough to make sure that the pros outweigh the cons.

It is nearly impossible for a leader to always make the right decision given that situations are always different and new approaches should be made. A leader should always accept the consequence of his actions and ready to be accountable for the consequences of his decisions. Once asked to make decision, a leader should be firm and sure about his actions in order for his subordinates to have confidence that their superior is doing the right thing.

Leaders with a weak personality will easily be influenced by those around him and always rely on the advise of others. These types of leaders always succumb to hearsay and don’t trust themselves. An organization with weak leadership always has a big chance of not attaining its goals, as the members will always scramble to influence the leader to follow their own interests. Truly, a strong will is a quality great leaders have.

Another key quality of a good leader is being opinionated. A leader should always have a say on every issue that his group becomes in involved in. He or she should have views on what steps need to be taken to solve a problem and always work to attain the best solution. Of course, having an opinion means that one’s mind is working towards finding a solution. Opinions from different people are always different but a leader should always find a way to pool the best ideas and come up with a decision that is favorable to all.

It takes quite a lot to be a leader. There are many skills that must be acquired and traits to be developed. Being a good leader entails much on the part of the figurehead. There is a need to develop skills in crafting good letters. As you see, this document is considered a self-expression tool of a leader.

A good leader is not only a good and effective strategist. He is also a good communicator. Good ideals and concepts running in the mind of the leader will be rendered futile if he wouldn’t be able to express those ideas clearly and effectively. A good leader must also be a good and effective communicator.

Drafting a letter is considered essential because that is usually how leaders communicate. Although personal and face-to-face communication is much more effective and reliable, letters give a sense of formality. Through communicating using letters, the formal tone of conversation is maintained. Thus, diplomacy is maintained and upheld when the leader drafts a letter to communicate with subordinates, with counterparts, with authorities and with other firms in behalf of the company.

Through letters, leaders are able to express what they really need to express without invoking any negative or ill feelings on the part of the recipient. Through this tool, the leader will be able to be polite and sincere in asking people to take the particular course of action he likes to achieve from the recipient.

Without the skill to draft good, effective and sincere letters, the leader will remain crippled and ineffective. The aggressiveness of the leader must be matched with wit and a strong will that should reflect in every written communication tool that he and his office releases, be it externally or internally.

There are many types of letters and the leader must only learn to draft one kind, that is, the business letter. The leader must always strive to be as formal and informative when writing business letters. This type of letter is the kind that will help the company achieve its goals. Particular course of action can be invoked from the recipient of the business letter.

Letters that leaders release must be straight to the point. As experts put it, the more one talks about a subject, the higher the chances that he will be offensive in the use of his words. It would be favorable on the part of the leader if the letter, the self-expression tool, is short because that means shorter preparation time.

Quality leadership is a positive asset that is needed in every organization. Observe any successful club, committee or team and you will find a capable leader in each of these organizations. What makes a successful leader? Why do some leaders inspire confidence and have an innate ability to motivate while other “leaders” are mired in mediocrity?

Most successful leaders have received good leadership training as they have advanced in their careers. Here are three ideas that each organization can utilize to train their employees to become successful leaders:

The Individual Leader -There is a common notion that some people are born leaders. They are born with the skills and charisma that attracts others to follow them. That may be true, but that concept does not preclude anyone else from being a leader. Many people acquire leadership skills with time and experience. For example, a new employee might start a job at the bottom of the company and move up in time as they gain expertise and experience. The employee’s familiarity and understanding of the business gives them an edge for opportunity and promotion. Many organizations prefer to promote leadership roles from within their company, instead of betting on an unknown commodity.

The Collective Organization - Every member of an organization can serve an important role. An organization functions because members fulfill different roles that enable them to thrive. An organization will have a division of leaders and followers. Both parties serve together to fulfill the purpose of the organization. It is important that members be given opportunities to work together, build relationships, trust, and confidence in order to fulfill the mission of an organization.

The Training Provider - During grade school, I held a leadership role in our academic honors society. I, along with three other student leaders attended a leadership training camp at the start of the school year. At the camp we listened to motivational speakers and participated in a variety of activities, one of which was participating in a ropes course. The purpose of the course was to promote comradeship among our small group. Each individual in the group was able to contribute. Some of the brawnier members contributed strength, while some of the brainier members contributed ideas and strategy. The objective was achieved through communication, teamwork and a well-executed plan.

You didn’t captain the high school football team to the state championship? You didn’t create and head the grade school recycling program, saving thousands of old-growth trees? Despair not, with a little direction and the right resources you can still become an effective and capable leader.
