Agoraphobia Treatment

Agoraphobia sufferers have plenty of different therapies that they can choose from to help them get over their condition. Conventional medical alternatives are medication and psychotherapy or there are complementary and self help therapies.

Psychotherapists will usually treat agoraphobia with CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy). CBT works by reducing the negative thinking and behaviour that cause the anxiety.

There are several highly effective panic attacks self help guides available online that have helped many thousands of people overcome agoraphobia. These will teach you how to control your anxiety so that it never reaches the level where it causes a panic attack. Eventually with repeated exposure to anxious situations your panic will simply fade away.

EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) is a self help therapy that can be used to help cure agoraphobia. This is rather like acupuncture that works on the emotions by tapping certain points of the body with your fingertips. The theory behind it is that it removes the emotional stress that has accumulated that causes panic and anxiety.

Exposure Therapy is another therapy that can help people with agoraphobia. It works by teaching the sufferer relaxation techniques and then gets them to imagine that they are in a situation in which they have previously experienced panic. They then learn to bring their anxious feelings under control using the relaxation techniques that they have been taught. The next step of the therapy is to then expose themselves to real situations and to apply what they have learned.

People with agoraphobia have also been helped with hypnosis. Hypnosis can either by given by a professional hypnotherapist or the person can buy a recorded hypnosis DVD, CD or download an MP3. If you shop around you will find hypnosis recordings for all types of phobias and anxiety including agoraphobia.

Flower essences and Herbal remedies for anxiety can provide support during situations that cause anxiety. You can buy herbal products already formulated for panic and anxiety. These will most often contain some combination of Lavender, Passion Flower or Valerian. Most health stores sell a Bach Flower Essence called “Rescue Remedy” which is great for restoring calm if you start to feel anxious.

Medication is the alternative to natural therapies. The medications used for agoraphobia are anti-depressants and sedatives. Medication should be avoided unless absolutely necessary as it can cause severe and unpleasant side effects. Medication only attempts to treat the symptoms of anxiety and not the cause. Unless the root cause of the problem is treated then there is not going to be a long term cure.

It may be difficult for an agoraphobia sufferer to seek help if it’s not possible for them to leave their home; but there is much that can be done. Thanks to the internet all of the information needed to learn to overcome agoraphobia can be found online. Self help programs and hypnosis recordings are all available to download directly to your computer.
